  • Pakistan journeying to 2023 (Test & OD only)

Pakistan have experienced a decade of varying highs and lows, reaching the top of the test rankings for the first time in 2016 under Misbah-ul-Haq, winning the Champions Trophy against arch-rivals India in 2017. These moments of success are in contrast to sub-par performances in both the 2011 & 2015 World Cups; several very poor tours to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, particularly in test matches.

With this in mind, I plan to guide Pakistan through a period of (eventual) sustained success, that will hopefully culminate in a 2023 World Cup and Test Championship. That being said, it is Pakistan, so who knows what may happen.

    Goals:
    • Top 4 finish in the Test Championship (Currently 5th)
    • Top 3 ranking in both formats (Currently 4th in tests, 5th in ODIs)
    • Make the semi-finals at the 2023 World Cup
    • Qualify for the 2021-2023 Test Championship final
As stated, I have a one-term focus through to 2023, hopefully this will allow Pakistan to plan and grow to become an experienced cricket side capable of winning anywhere, anytime.

With no T20s, it’s a simple schedule for this season. All six test matches are for Test Championship points, so there's an extra incentive, if one was ever needed.

    2019/20 Schedule
3 x ODIs in the Netherlands
    3 x Tests in England
3 x ODIs in South Africa
    3 x ODIs vs Zimbabwe
2 x Tests in New Zealand
2 x Tests in South Africa

      1st ODI vs Netherlands

Conditions: Pitch looks pretty good for batting, showing signs that it will deteriorate throughout the match, but to what extent is unknown. The outfield is thick and sluggish but there won’t be any issues with the weather, a bit of cloud, but nowhere near enough to spoil the game.

Pakistan XI: Imam ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, Haris Sohail, Iftikhar Ahmed, Sarfraz Ahmed (c) (+), Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Usman Shinwari, Mohammad Amir, Shaheen Afridi

      Toss: Netherlands elected to bowl

A very tidy start by the Dutch bowlers sees three maidens bowled in row inside the powerplay, Zaman is the chief culprit. Nonetheless the two are untroubled, taking their time but both posting fifties and a century partnership. Zaman’s (58) departure with the score at 126 introduces a period of brain fades, as no recognised Pakistan batsman except Babar Azam reach double figures as they tumble to 7-211. With things quite bleak, Usman Shinwari lightens the moodm blazing four boundaries in an entertaining little knock that lifts the total a respectable number. Dismissed with the score at 250, and Amir the next ball, Azam steps into gear, hitting 32 runs off 11 balls to bring his team up to 9-285 at the ending of innings. Falling close of a well deserved century.

Time van der Gugten was the pick of the bowlers, his figures reading 10-2-51-3.

Visee falls in the first over, however O’Dowd and Ben Cooper launch a strong counter-attack, putting on a hundred run stand with ease. Rotating through his bowlers, Iftikhar breaks through first, trapping Ben Cooper (56) in front, and O’Dowd (62) follows shortly off Shadab. Tom Cooper starts to settle nicely despite the fact that Ackermann (14) and ten Doeschate (5) never finding their groove.

When Michael Rippon walks in at 5-190 and time not a huge worry, things are a little more uncomfortable for Pakistan than they should be. These feelings are exemplified as Rippon joins in on the fun with his teammate, hitting boundaries for fun, as an upset becomes more of a possibility. With less than fifty runs required, Cooper deposits 17 off a Shinwari over and defeat seems a given at this point. Afridi who has been the pick of the bowlers, is called up to bowl the 44th, Rippon takes him for three consecutive boundaries, meaning there’s only 12 left to win. Even when Cooper (80) is dismissed on the last ball of the over, a Dutch victory seems certain. Shinwari’s over goes for a single, the run required to bring up Rippon’s half-century, and then, in his final over, Afridi traps Rippon plumb in front.

10 to win, 7 wickets down, 4 overs left.

Afridi’s over is tight, but the experienced van der Gugten manages to squeeze out three runs. He’s unable to force any runs off Amir’s next over. With Afridi having bowled out his allotment of overs, Shadab is called upon.

He strikes first ball with a straight one, van der Merwe on his way for a second-ball duck. Shadab’s next ball is played and missed at by Malik, before he plays all around a quicker ball and is given out LBW.

One wicket left, 7 runs to win.

In just his second one-day international, Brandon Glover is called upon in the dying sunlight to either survive three deliveries or get van der Gugten on strike. His first ball, he survives a massive LBW shout, Hawkeye confirming it pitched outside leg. However he has no response to the next delivery, which in all fairness was very similar, a quick, fullish leg break that beats Glover’s awkward defences and gives an extremely fortunate Pakistan side a very undeserved 6 run victory. There are initial scenes of jubilation from the players, until the realisation strikes that they have saved face, rather than create history.

For his 98*, Babar Azam is award the man of the match award. For Pakistan, they have the chance to wrap up the series in the next match, with many players wanting to put forward a strong performance.

        2nd ODI vs Netherlands

Conditions: Pitch seems a bit livelier than the one we played on a couple of days ago, though batting first shouldn’t be an issue. The sun is out, and the grass is cut thin, could be another score fest like the first match.

Pakistan XI: Imam ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, Haris Sohail, Iftikhar Ahmed, Sarfraz Ahmed (c) (+), Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Usman Shinwari, Mohammad Amir, Shaheen Afridi

Going in unchanged, need a response from our middle order and spinners.

        Toss: Pakistan elected to bat

Patchy start, losing two wickets inside the first 10 overs. Steady response from the middle order. Ul-Haq’s scoring rate a bit of a concern. In a spot of bother at 5-129 in the 34th, but a set Iftikhar and an aggressive Wasim (10x4s, 1x6) push us up to 8-250. Probably thirty short of what we would have liked, but the pitch is showing promising signs for our bowlers.

Afridi picks up from where he left off in the first game, grabbing Visee (1) and Ben Cooper (4) before the score reach 12. O’Dowd and Tom Cooper threaten to move the game forwards in a similar way like the first one, however their half-century partnership is ended by Shadab when O’Dowd edges one behind. Cooper shortly follows, and although Colin Ackermann his a run-a-ball 36, Wasim’s left arm finger spinners prove to be the match winner.

asim bowls beautifully from one end, bowling his ten overs through straight, picking up four wickets in the process, as Pakistan cruise to a 63-run win.

A bit more comfortable this time, but O’Dowd and the Cooper brothers are really dangerous when at the crease.

Wasim’s spell of 4-38 and well-played 64* earns him the man of the match award.

He's definitely in the test squad to face England. Showed a fair bit of promise in Australia.

              3rd ODI vs Netherlands

Pitch: Flat, looks quite flat. A good outfield too, the groundsman’s done a very good job. Whoever bats first will be looking to post a big score.

Pakistan XI: Imam ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Sohail, Abid Ali Iftikhar Ahmed, Sarfraz Ahmed (c) (+), Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Fahim Ashraf, Mohammad Amir, Shaheen Afridi

A rest for Babar, a chance for Sohail at number 3, while Abid Ali gets a go at 4. Shinwari has been disappointing with the ball, so Fahim Ashraf gets his chance.

              Toss: Netherlands elect to bat

Amir had Visee caught behind in the first over and though O’Dowd (47) help started his team moving, Shadab Khan struck three times in quick succession to leave the Dutch in a spot of bother at 4-92. While our spinners bowled out miserly spells, it was disappointing our quicks couldn’t do their part, and in the end, the Netherlands ended on 8-241, when we really should have bowled them out for less than 200.

Colin Ackemann’s top scored with a fluent 52, and Roelof can der Merwe provided some late innings entertainment with his 33 off just 21 balls.

ul-Haq and Zaman started off well, bringing up the fifty partnership in good time. A slight wobble left us at 3-82, but Sohail (88) and Iftikhar (56) came together and put on a 130-run stand, to take us in sight of victory. Both departed before the target was achieved, but Sarfraz and Wasim had no problem polishing off the few remaining runs. Handing us a five-wicket win and a clean sweep of the series.

Sohail’s 88 off 82 deliveries (11x4s, 3x6s) saw him earn man of the match.

ODI series review & 18 Man Squad for test series in England

                Netherlands ODI series Statistics

                Batting

                Imam ul-Haq 136 runs @ 45.33, 3 innings, 1 x 50, HS 68
                Haris Sohail 132 runs @ 44, 3 innings, 1 x 50, HS 88
                Iftikhar Ahmed 129 runs @ 43, 3 innings, 2 x 50, HS 64*
                Babar Azam, 100 runs @ 100, 2 innings, 1 x 50, HS 98*

                Bowling

                Shadab Khan, 9 wickets @ 13.67, BB 4/54, Econ 4.50
                Shahan Afridi, 7 wickets @ 25.7, BB 3/41, Econ 4.90
                Imad Wasim 4 wickets @ 25, BB 4/38, Econ 4.17
                Mohammad Amir, 4 wickets @ 35.25, BB 2/48, Econ 5.42

                Key takeaways

Top order and middle order settled

Not something to worry about in the short term, ul-Haq and Zaman had a century and half-century partnership which gives us a strong platform to build on. Complinted by the sublime Babar Azam at number three. Haris Sohail and Iftikhar Ahmed had some solid outings as well, definitely a positive out of the tour.

                Spinners did their job

A top notch series from Shadab Khan, and he was well supported by Imad Wasim, who might not have taken a heap of wickets, but who proved very effective at putting a stop to easy runs in the middle overs.

Quicks needs to up their game

While Shahan Afridi had a good series, the same can’t be said for the rest of the paceman. Having three left armers in the squad is less than ideal, but Amir, Shinwari and Ashraf would all be disappointed with their performances and eager to do better next time around. Could open the door for someone like Naseem Shah or Mohammad Abbas

Iftikhar Ahmed (29, RHB, Off Spin, 3 matches, bat avg 9.6, bowl avg 141)
Shadab Khan (21, RHB, Leg Spin, 5 matches, bat avg 34.29, bowl avg 38.83)
Naseem Shah (17, RHB, RF, 4 matches, bowl avg 26.85)
Mohammad Abbas (30, RHB, RMF, 18 matches, bowl avg 20.76)
Shaheen Afridi (20, LHB, LMF, 8 matches, bowl avg 27.97)
Yasir Shah (34, RHB, LS, 39 matches, bowl avg 30.53)
Hasan Ali (26, RHB, RMF, 9 matches, bowl avg 28.9)
Imran Khan (33, RHB, RMF, 10 matches, bowl avg 31.62)

Azhar Ali continues as captain, with Azam appointed deputy. Fawad Alam is included after posting a pile of runs on the domestic scene. Haris Sohail's earns his spot on the back of a decent ODI series, while there is some hesitation for who will open the batting out of Abid Ali, Masood or ul-Haq. The bowling looks at least set, with Mohammad Abbas hoping to enjoy his time in England, he'll be supported by Shahan Afridi and the frightening Naseem Shah, while Yasir Shah will be expected to bowl a lot of overs with his leg spin. Having drawn the last test series against England 1-1 back in 2018, and with each test match worth points in the Test Championship, there's a lot to play for.

                  Three Day Friendly vs MCC

Conditions: Forecast is for a lot of grey clouds over the three day. The wickets looks good, so if given the opportunity to, we will likely bowl first.

Pakistan XI: Shan Masood, Abid Ali, Azhar Ali (c), Babar Azam, Fawad Alam, Asid Shafiq, Sarafraz Ahmed, Yasir Shah, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Abbas, Shaheen Afridi

Iftikhar unlucky to miss out but this does look like our preferred full-strength team.

                  Toss: Pakistan elect to bowl

Wickets fell from the start and were consistent all the way through, with no partnership greather than 35. Shan Masood was given two overs with his dibbl dobblies but couldn’t pounce in his two overs. A rain delay left us with 9 overs to face to finish off day 1, which we safely negotiated for the loss of no wickets.

Both Ali’s departed for less than ideal scores in the morning session, but Masood and Azam straightened the ship. Alam was in for Masood at 134, and put together a confident 37 before he was out caught. This brought Asad Shafiq and Azam together, who proceeded to bat together until the innings was declared on the morning of day 3 at 4-520. Complete dominance from the pair, who played themselves into good form.

With conditions good for bowling, little bit worried that they got to 1-97, but then we turned a corner and bowled them out with 23 overs left in the game. All up, a nice win, and hopefully we can take it into the first test.

Undefeated on 230, no surprises that Babar Azam was man of the match.

Great! Maybe consider giving rizwan a go? Although I dont know who you'll swap him for, maybe keep an eye on sarfraz's form

1st Test Match v England at Lords

Conditions: Overcast conditions have been forecast from day 2 onwards, so vitally important to win the toss and bat first. Pitch looks as if it will help the bowlers a bit, runs in the first innings going to be very crucial.

Pakistan XI: Shan Masood, Abid Ali, Azhar Ali (c), Babar Azam, Fawad Alam, Asid Shafiq, Sarafraz Ahmed (+), Yasir Shah, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Abbas, Shaheen Afridi
                      Unchanged from our warmup match.

England XI: Alex Lees, Adam Lyth, Jonathan Bairstow, Ollie Pope, Eoin Morgan, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Jos Butler (+), Jofra Archer, Jack Leach, James Anderson

No Root, no Stokes, no Broad.

                      Toss: Pakistan elect to bat

A grind of a first session, Masood (6) fails, but we reach lunch at 1-60. Abid Ali starts well after lunch, and all is seemingly well with half an hour till tea, where both set batsmen depart leaving us in a spot of bother at the twenty-minute interval. Azam and Alam hold the line in the final session, Azam playing some delightful shots as he brings up his half century. Alam falls shortly after the new ball is taken, but we end up only 4 down at stumps with the score at 227.

Day 2 begins terribly, with Azam out on the third ball of the day. With a lot of grey cloud, the team capitulate, ending up all out for 286, not a terrible score as batting is only going to get worse, but another 70-80 runs would have been very handy. Jofra Archer is the best with the ball with 3-64

Abbas strikes early in England’s response, trapping Lyth in front. Lees and Bairstown launch a strong counter attack, cruising past 50 until Lees top edges a Naseem Shah bouncer. Oli Pope only lasts two balls.Afridi entices an edge from Eoin Morgan’s bat next over, only to see Ali at third slip put down a difficult chance. It doesn’t matter as Shah rips through Morgan’s defences the next over.

Kohler-Cadmore and Bairstow see England through to tea at 4-105, and a rain delay leaves only enough time for 20 overs to be bowled in the final session.

They didn’t even last fifteen, Shah and Abbas bowled unchanged and ran through the English middle and lower order. Bowling full, fast and with a mastery of control, Shah claimed 7-35 while Abbas picked up the key wicket of top-scorer Bairstow (55).

Pakistan were 0-5 at stumps. Day 3 did not start well, as James Anderson tore through the top order, to leave things delicately balance at 5-43, Sarfaraz and Shafiq survived through to lunch, but quickly fell after the break, as Pakistan capitulated to be all our for 105, leaving England requiring 250 to win.

With overcast skies, England made a promising start, until Lees popped up a catch to Abid Ali on the final ball before tea. The three quicks continued to terrorise the England batting lineup, as they collapsed from 1-57 to 6-102, Yasir Shah was able to get into the action, picking up a wicket thanks to a sharp catch from Shafiq.

Butler and Archer were able to steady England through to stumps at 6-149, requiring 101 to win.

Shah eased the tension of the Pakistani changeroom by knocking over Butler with the second ball of the day, and backed it up by going through Archer a few overs later. Oli Stone and Jack Leach began to solidify, grimly picking up runs, until Shah trapped Leach in front for 17. England eeked to 200, Stone hitting some boundaries, but with 49 runs required, Abbas snuck one through Stone’s bat and pads, winning the test match for his country.

With match figures of 11-76, it was no surprise to see the 17 year-old Naseem Shah awarded the match of the match award. THe underdogs take a 1-0 lead into the second test, it will be interesting to see how the hosts respond. Pakistan also pick up a crucial 40 points in the Test Championship.

Thank you very much. No idea why England decided to exclude Root & Stokes, but I promise you that you'll be shaking your head when you see there team for the next match.

2nd Test Match vs England @ The Rose Bowl

Conditions: A mixed weather forecast, plenty of cloud around on day 4. The pitch looks good, and has something on offer for everyone.

Pakistan XI: Shan Masood, Abid Ali, Azhar Ali (c), Babar Azam, Fawad Alam, Asid Shafiq, Sarafraz Ahmed (+), Yasir Shah, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Abbas, Shaheen Afridi

England XI: Hasan Azad, Chris Dent, James Vince, Joe Root (c), Ben Stokes, Jason Roy, Adam Rossington (+), Craig Overton, Stuart Board, Matt Parkinson, Jamie Porter

Wow, England have completely changed their team from the first test, it’s literally a whole new side. This is unprecedented in the modern era. Pakistan go in unchanged. After a low-scoring match to open the series, who will put the runs on the board, or are we set for another bowlers test?

                            Toss: Pakistan elect to bat

A 93-run partnership to open the game was pleasing. Masood went to tea on 99, and brought his century up straight after tea. He was eventually the third and final wicket to fall on day 1 for a well anchored 120.

                            Stumps: Pakistan 3-245 (Azam 22*, Alam 8*)

Babar Azam and Asad Shaiq pushed the score above 300, with Azam recording a patient half-century before lunch. He partnered with Ahmed to put together a century stand, as Ahmed (54) found some runs. Little contributions from Yasir (18) and Nasam (14) helped pushed Pakistan beyond 500, with Azam undefeated on 138.

England survived five overs through to stumps.

                            Stumps day 2: Pakistan 508 (Azam 138*, Masood 120); England 0-9 (Azad 7*, Dent 1*)

England made a much better start this time around, with Azad looking the more comfortable. However it wasn’t until Yasir Shah was introduced that a wicket was captured. James Vince hit a stylish 17, but found himself back in the sheds before lunch. The first hour after lunch belonged to Pakistan as they captured four wickets, with Yasir taking three of the four.

As Overton and debutant Rossington began to steady the ship, Shaheen Afridi was given the ball and promptly claimed the wickets of Rossington, Overton, Broad and Parkinson in just three overs to bowl England out for 196, giving Pakistan a lead of 313. Afridi finished with the figures of 5-43.

In no mood to be rushed, Pakistan built their lead with ease in the final session, with a lead of over 400 heading into day 4.

                            Stumps day 3: Pakistan 508 & 1-96 (Masood 45*, Ali 3*); England 196 (Afridi 5-43)

A second century for the match from Masood was the highlight of the first session, he only found support in Babar Azam (48) as Pakistan declared after lunch, setting England 527 to win in just under five sessions.

Naseem Shah picked up two wickets before tea, and then another one straight after tea. Root and Stokes took England to 100, but from 4-111, they collapsed to be all out for 130 in just six overs, with Afridi once again running riot claiming four of his five wickets in the collapse, earning his second five-wicket haul for the match.

A 396-run win secured Pakistan the series win, their first in England since 1996, and another forty points for the Test Championship

In a game where only four batsmen crossed fifty, Shaan Masood won the man of the match awards for his two centuries (120 & 102). Afridi’s match figures of 10-73 not enough in the judge’s eyes.
