This is the problems with the AI. There are two attributes for every player in the raw data (skill & ability). Sometimes the ability dips much below the skill and the AI selects the XI based on ability, so let's assume Root has skill of 100 & ability of 100, due to poor form, his ability dips to 80, but Dent has skill of 60 and ability of 80, so if he's in good form at highest ability, he will get chosen ahead of Root! This is a fair but unreal system, like they say form is is temporary but class is permanent!

3rd test vs England at Trent Bridge
Conditions: A good wicket, looks like there won’t be as much in it for the bowlers as was at the Rose Bowl, but will still be enough encouragement there. The weather, which has been in Pakistan’s favour for the series, looks like it will be tame this time around, with overcast conditions expected to appear only briefly.

Pakistan XI: Shan Masood, Abid Ali, Azhar Ali (c), Babar Azam, Fawad Alam, Asid Shafiq, Sarafraz Ahmed (+), Yasir Shah, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Abbas, Shaheen Afridi

England XI: Chris Dent, Varun Chopra, Daniel Lawerence, Joe Root (c), Liam Livingstone, Johnny Bairstow (+), Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Craig Overton, Jack Leach, James Anderson

Pakistan unchanged again, Alam will want to repay the selectors the faith they have showed him. Just the seven changes for England, with Root, Stokes, Overton and Dent keeping their spots. Two debutants in Chopra and Lawrence.

      Toss: England elect to bat

Afridi picked up from where he left off in the second test, nabbing Dent with the second ball of the match, and when Lawrence fell before drinks, England were looking like they had all series with the bat, in trouble. Up stepped Root and the debutant Chopra, guiding them to lunch at a comfortable 2-91. A strong middle session for Pakistan saw the fall of three wickets, including the dangerous Root (71) & Chopra (55), however at 5-177, Ben Stokes joined Liam Livingstone in the middle and the pair wasted no time, finishing the session in a flourish of boundaries. However, Stokes fell on the first ball after tea to the probing Abbas, bringing Chris Woakes out to join Livingstone. The two put on a hundred partnership in no time, blazing the old ball around, Livingstone brought up his first test hundred, but when they both fell in the same over to Afridi, it caused to end the day in a draw.

      Stumps Day 1: England 8-323 (Livingstone 104, Root 55, Afridi 4-74)

England were bowled out inside the first hour for 350, by far their highest score of the series. Afridi picked up his fifth wicket in the morning, his third five-wicket haul of the series.

Masood fell in the pre-lunch period, and the run out of Abid Ali left the score at 2-65. Babar Azam looked brilliant, but when he and Fawad Alam were dismissed in consecutive balls off Jack Leach, Pakistan went into tea at 4-134. Anderson returned Abbas’ favour from yesterday, dismissing Shafiq on the first ball after tea, and although Ahmed offered up a resolute defence, it was Jack Leach taking 6-39 who owned the day, as Pakistan crumbled to be dismissed for just 202, giving England a 148-run lead.

      Stumps Day 2: England 350 & 0-1 lead Pakistan 202 (Leach 6-39) by 149 runs

In tricky batting conditions, England lost only the two wickets to lunch, a dropped catch ten minutes before the interval would have frustrated Pakistan. Wickets began to fall consistently in the middle session, but the runs kept coming for England. Chris Woakes and Craig Overton combined to put on 95-runs, effectively taking the match out of Pakistan’s reach, as they could only claim the wicket of Woakes in the final session. England heading into day 4 with a commanding lead.

      Stumps Day 3: England 350 & 8-280 (Woakes 71, Overton 50*) lead Pakistan 202 by 428 runs

The last two wickets were captured early on day 4, Afridi claiming them both to end up with 5-78, his second ten-wicket haul of the series. This left Pakistan requiring a daunting 446 to record a clean sweep.. The captain Ali and Masood looked confident in getting to lunch with the score at 1-74. Azhar failed to reach fifty, but Masood pushed on past his half-century and with Azam went to tea at 2-159. Masood fell in the first over after tea, and then Alam just three balls later, giving the unfortunate 34-year-old a pair, in what well could be his final test. Shafiq fell shortly after leaving things looking quite gloomy for the visitors. Azam and Sarfaraz survived that period, but were left with a mountain of work to do on a pitch that was very receptive to spin.

      Stumps Day 4: England 350 & 297 lead Pakistan 202 & 5-215 (Masood 70, Azam 33*, Ahmed 30*) by 230 runs

Day 5 last only 66 minutes, once Sarfaraz fell for 35, the tail quickly fell away, although there were concerns for Mohammad Abbas who was felled by a nasty ball from James Anderson, and having to retire hurt. Azam was undefeated on 49, ending the series with 334 runs at 83.5.

Jack Leach won man of the match on the back of his first innings haul, England secured a 191-run win, and 40 points for the Test Championship, but were made to watch as Pakistan celebrated their series victory at the presentation ceremony. For his 23 wickets at an average of 15.17, Shaheen Afridi was deemed the player of the series.

        Test Series Review vs England

A 2-1 series win over England was very pleasing, especially having it wrapped up before the third test.

        Series Stats

        Batting
        • Babar Azam (334 runs @ 83.5, 1x100s, 1x50s, HS 138*)
        • Shaan Masood (333 runs @ 55.5, 2x100s, 1x50s, HS 120)
        • Abid Ali (213 runs @ 35.50, 1x50s, HS 66)
        • Azhar Ali (181 runs @ 30.17, HS 48)
        Bowling
        • Shaheen Afridi (23 wickets @ 15.17, 4x5s, 2x10, BBI 5-30)
        • Naseem Shah (17 wickets @ 16.76, 1x5s, 1x10, BBI 7-35)
        • Yasir Shah (10 wickets @ 29.5, BBI 4-76)
        • Mohammad Abbas (10 wickets @ 32.1, BBI3-46)
        Positives

        Top order
A strong top order performance from Shaan Masood and Abid Ali set a really strong platform for the team to build on. Masood's performance in the second test was a particular highlight, and will be remembered for a long time.

        Babar Azam
His series average of 83.50 was boosted by two not outs, but it's fair to say Azam was Pakistan's best bat on the tour, despite Mansood's two-century performance in the second test. Azam was always in control, seemingly never fussed or rushed at the crease. He was able to bat on with the tail, forging valuable partnerships with the bowlers.

        Bowling Unit
All 60-wickets shared by the four bowlers, Abbas, Naseem Shah, Shaheen Afridi and Yasir Shah. They ran rampant through the English batting lineup, often in conditions providing assistance for bowlers good enough to exploit them. Afridi was the pick of the lot with 23 wickets at 15.17, while the 17 year-old Naseem Shah had 17 wickets at 16.76, and at an impressive strike rate of 30.2. Hopefully this unit will continue to perform in all conditions.

        Negatives

        Middle Order
Outside of Babar Azam, the middle order of Asid Shafiq and Fawad Alam were extremely disappointing, with neither batsmen reaching 100 runs for the series, both will be extremely fortunate to keep their spots in the future, though Shafiq does have a career of runs. The door is well and truly open for someone like Haris Sohail or Iftikar Ahmed to nab a spot.

        Sarfraz Ahmed
While flawless behind the stumps, Ahmed's batting (152 runs @ 25.33) was more than disappointing, and when combined with the poor performances of Shafiq and Alam, is a real concern for Pakistan moving forward. With Mohammad Rizwan in the wings, Ahmed may find himself on the sidelines come the next test tour.

Next up is an 3-match ODI tour of South Africa

1st ODI vs South Africa (D/N)

Conditions: Plenty in it for the bowlers, with a tinge of green on it, which may make Pakistan go with four quicks. There’s a perfect weather forecast for this match.
Pakistan XI: Imam ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam (c), Haris Sohail, Mohammad Rizwan (+), Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Usman Shinwari, Naseem Shah

South Africa XI: Quinton de Kock (c) (+), Aiden Markram, Rassie can der Dussen, Faf du Plessis, Jaaneman Malan, Heinrich Klaasen, Dwaine Pretorius, Andy Phehlukwayo, Keshav Maharaj, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada

A debut for Naseem Shah, Pakistan going in with four quicks and the two off-spinning all-rounders

              Toss: Pakistan elect to bat

ul-Haq and Zaman started well, pushing the ball around and finding the boundary with consistency, they brought the 100-run stand up in the nineteenth over before Zaman (58) was caught behind. ul-Haq seemed to take a signal from this and proceeded to tee off, smacking the ball to all parts of the stadium. When Babar was dismissed for 20, the pair had put on a partnership of 84 in very quick time. ul-Haq got his century and then got out as Pakistan entered the final 10 overs at 4-247. Led by Ahmed’s powerful 54*, Sohail lifting his strike rate and some lusty blows from the tail, Pakistan reached 9-341 from their 50 overs, an imposing total on this wicket. Pakistan’s innings featured 12 sixes.

Losing de Kock (16) early didn’t stop South Africa from their aggressive approached, as they reach 120 inside 15 overs. Usman Shinwari was then able to trap the dangerous van der Dussen (97) with a whizzing yorker. This preceded a period of back-and-forth momentum swings, with neither side establishing control of the match. Aiden Markam went to his century with a six, but was dismissed caught behind just three balls later, on the first ball of a new spell from Afridi, with Rizwan taking a diving catch. This wicket started a collapse of 5-34, that would swing the momentum one final time Pakistan’s way, with Amir, Afridi and Shinwari all sharing in the spoils with three wickets each in a comfortable 47-run win, showing the value of runs on the board.

With the highest, and most impactful innings of the match, ul-Haq was a deserved winner of the man of the match award.

Interesting series so far, Khushdil Shah might be a good middle order batsmen to consider in limited overs series in the future.

2nd ODI vs South Africa @ Cape Town (D/N)

Conditions: A flat wicket, and beautiful weather is the case for this crucial one-day international. A bit of extra bounce in it may entice us to with 4 seamers again.

Pakistan XI: Imam ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam (c), Haris Sohail, Mohammad Rizwan (+), Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Usman Shinwari,

South Africa XI: Quinton de Kock (c) (+), Aiden Markram, Rassie can der Dussen, Faf du Plessis, Jaaneman Malan, Heinrich Klaasen, Dwaine Pretorius, Andy Phehlukwayo, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn

                  Toss: Pakistan elect to bat

Batting first on a good wicket, ul-Haq failed to capitalise on his form and the wicket, dismissed leg before after getting himself set. This brought Babar Azam to the crease, who took twenty deliveries to get his eye in before he went about slaughtering the South African attack to all parts of the ground. Cover drives, on drives, flicks through mid-wicket and square leg, even a few cut shots were played as Babar amassed his highest one-day international score, 150 (off just 114 balls). When he was dismissed with score at 5-274, Pakistan would have been disappointed to have not been on more, but cameos from Iftikhar Ahmed and Shadab Khan lifted them to 7-336.

South Africa’s top order started with intent, finding the boundary regularly, but a tight spell of bowling from Imad Wasim put the screws on as he picked up the wickets of Markram (42) and van der Dussen (29) to make the score 3-104, du Plessis and Malan steadied the ship, but again the pressure as Malan was the victim ofa suicide single.

du Plessis found a partner in Heinrich Klaasen, who blasted boundaries as the required run rate rapidly decreased. With 95 runs required off 11 overs, and 6 wickets in hand, it seemed South Africa had set themselves up for an unlikely win. Once again though, it was Shahan Afridi who made the key breakthrough, having Klaasen caught behind off the first ball of a new spell. When du Plessis was bowled by Shadab Khan in the next over, with no hope, South Africa fell in a heap, and were dismissed shortly afterwards for 273. Cleaning up the tail netted Shinwari the best bowling figures, with an expensive 3-49.

No surprises for who was man of the match, Azam the clear difference with his amazing knock as Pakistan toon an unassailable 2-0 lead with one match to go.

3rd ODI vs South Africa (D/N)

Pakistan XI: Imam ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam (c), Haris Sohail, Mohammad Rizwan (+), Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Usman Shinwari,

South Africa XI: Quinton de Kock (c) (+), Aiden Markram, Rassie can der Dussen, Faf du Plessis, Jaaneman Malan, Heinrich Klaasen, Dwaine Pretorius, Chris Morris, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn

Naseem in for the rested AMir, Moss in for Phehlukwayo

Conditions: A belter of a wicket, flat, a fast outfield and perfect conditions suggests this could be a high scoring game.

Toss: South Africa elect to bowl

From 3-34 inside the powerplay, we recovered well to finish at 8-278. Strong middle order displays from Sohail (60), Rizwan (79), Ahmed (58) & Wasim (34 off 22) allowed us to reach our total. Slightly disappointing that we couldn’t fully capitalise the strong base (4-211 at 40 overs) we provided ourselves. Dwayne Pretorious with a brilliant 5-37.

Things felt like they were never going to go our way when Markram was dropped in the first over. Despite removing him shortly afterwards, blazing innings from de Kock (74) & van der Dussen (44) before a mini-collapse of 3-10 left South Africa at 4-147. A 106-run partnership in quick from du Plessis and Klassen put the result beyond doubt, as the pair found themselves batting with ease on a very flat wicket. Some late wickets added a bit of respectability to the scoreboard, but Pakistan were always behind after losing three wickets inside their opening 10 overs.

Pretorius’ five-wicket haul saw him awarded the man of the match award. Pakistan win the series but lose another dead rubber.

South Africa Series Review & Squad for Zimbabwe ODI tour

A 2-1 series victory in South Africa was very pleasing, although losing another dead rubber means we still have some work to do. The batsmen all fired, with everyone averaging above 40, except Sohail (with an average of 39.67). The bowling was quite expensive, with everyone going for more than 6 an over except Shadab and Wasim, but everyone shared around the wickets, so we're building a cohesive unit. Iftikar Ahmed scored 145 runs at a strike rate of 127.2 for the tour, so he comes away as one of our best.

For our three-match ODI series against ZImbabwe, we go in with an unchanged squad.

                        1st ODI v Zimbabwe (D/N)

Conditions: A wicket that has a bit in it for everyone, the outfield is what you expect of a subcontinent ground. A sunny day in Sharjah, will be followed by a clear evening.

Pakistan XI: Imam ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam (c), Haris Sohail, Mohammad Rizwan (+), Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Usman Shinwari,

Zimbabwe XI: Chamunorwa Chibhabha, Brian Mudzinganyama, Craig Ervine, Sikander Raza, Brendan Taylor, Peter Moor (+), Sean Williams (c), Brandon Mavuta, Kyle Jarvis, Carl Mumba, Tendai Chatara
                        Toss: Pakistan elect to bat

A positive start gave Babar Azam a platform to build on, when Zaman fell at 2-104, Sohail (35) joined Azam to put on 111 in 14 overs. Azam continued on despite the loss of his partner, bringing up his century off just 79 balls, he was able to farm most of the strike, and took advantage of the strike by dispatching the bowling to all parts of the ground, as 77 runs were scored in the final six overs, including monstrous overs of 20 and 18 off Chatara, as Azam finished on 180* (off 126 balls) in a team total of 6-360.

An early wicket to Amir forced Zimbabwe to be cautious, and this put them behind the eight ball even as Ervine (72) and Chibhabha (69) put on over 100. A timely run out of the dangerous Ervine brought Sikander Raza to the crease, he composed a quickfire half-century, but the slow-scoring Chibhabha and then Brendan Taylor were dismissed quickly by Usman Shinwari as Zimbabwe faltered to 4-184 and with time running out. Amir came back and knocked over Raza, dashing Zimbabwe’s chances, as they were eventually bundled out for 256, going down in defeat by 104 runs.

No surprises for who won the man of the match award, Babar Azam!

                          2nd ODI v Zimbabwe (D/N)
Conditions: The surface looks as if it will take spin early, while providing a bit of encouragement for the seamers, while another average outfield will make batsmen work just a bit harder for their runs.

Pakistan XI: Imam ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam (c), Haris Sohail, Mohammad Rizwan (+), Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Usman Shinwari

Zimbabwe XI: Chamunorwa Chibhabha, Brian Mudzinganyama, Craig Ervine, Sikander Raza, Brendan Taylor, Peter Moor (+), Sean Williams (c), Brandon Mavuta, Kyle Jarvis, Carl Mumba, Tendai Chatara

                          Toss: Zimbabwe elect to bowl

The early loss of Zaman (6) didn’t stop Azam and ul-Haq from putting together a strong partnership, Azam continued his form from the first match while ul-Haq was content to push the ball around. The pair added 101 before ul-Haq was caught after mishitting Mavuta. This brought an aggressive Harris Sohail to the crease, and together with Azam, they blasted Pakistan past 200, Azam bringing up his second consecutive century, though this time with more patience and guise.

With 12 overs to go, things were looking pretty at 2-224, but captain Sean Williams provided the spark needed, trapping Azam in front, and then removing Mohammad Rizwan (25) a few overs later. These wickets, along with some brilliant death bowling from Tendai Chatara, limited Pakistan to being bowled out off the penultimate delivery of their overs, with the score at 293. A much more gettable score for the visitors than their first match.

Afridi struck early, but Chibhabha and Ervine worked their way through the powerplay and then begin to take advantage batting under lights. After taking 12 off a Shadab Khan, Craig Ervine backed it up next over hitting Wasim for 22, including three sixes. Ervine brought up his half-century during the over off just 36 deliveries. Amir dismissed Ervine (73) shortly afterwards, Khan then dismissed Chibhabha (67) before Amir claimed Raza (8) to even things up at 4-171.

Brendan Taylor and Peter Moor counter-attacked, with Moor taking a liking to Iftikhar Ahmen’s off-spin by dispatching him for three sixes. Amir and Afridi were brought back to tighten things up as Zimbabwe reduced the target to under 50 runs, and Afridi did no favours by dropping Moor off his own bowling, but then him sortly afterwards. When Amir knocked over the captain Williams and 20 runs still required, Pakistan were still a chance, but the experienced Taylor guided his side home to an upset win, with four wickets in hand.

Craig Ervine’ game changing innings was rewarded with the man of the match award.

                            3rd ODI vs Zimbabwe (D/N)

Conditions: A pitch likely to help the quicks, perfect weather and a fast outfield should encourage a high-scoring match

Pakistan XI: Imam ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam (c), Haris Sohail, Mohammad Rizwan (+), Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Naseem Shah

Zimbabwe XI: Chamunorwa Chibhabha, Brian Mudzinganyama, Craig Ervine, Sikander Raza, Brendan Taylor, Peter Moor (+), Sean Williams (c), Kyle Jarvis, Carl Mumba, Tapiwa Mufudza, Tendai Chatara

One change for each side, Naseem Shah comes in for the expensive Shinwari, while Tapiwa Mufudza replaces Braandon Mavuta.

                            Toss: Zimbabwe elect to bowl

A fast start saw Pakistan end the powerplay at 0-70, with ul-Haq setting the tone, bringing up his half-century off 37 deliveries. Zaman followed the trend, as the two slaughtered the Zimbabwe attack all around the ground, reaching the 150 stand inside 20 overs. Mufudza showed his worth by dismissing both openers within the next 3 overs with Sohail coming to the wicket to join Azam at 2-173. After a couple of quiet overs, both batsmen quickly found their grove, with Mumba being hit for 25 runs off an over. Azam’s half-century came off just 32 balls, including three maximums, and while Sohail’s took a bit longer, his scoring rate quickly caught up to Azam’s.

When Sohail was dismissed for 81, there were still 10 overs to go, and the score was 3-352. Mohammad Rizwan joined the party, smashing his way to 21-ball half-century, as the 400 was reached in the 45th over. Rizwan continued to slaughter the bowling around, hitting sixes with aplomb as Pakistan hit two sixes in every over from the 46th to the 49th over. Rizwan ended up hitting the equal third-fastest ODI century when he struck a boundary off the third ball of the final over.

A boundary off the final ball of the innings gave him the top score for the innings as Pakistan took the world record for the highest team score in ODIs by finishing on 6-483. The top five all made scores of 76 or above, with 60 boundaries hit and a massive 24 sixes struck.

Chasing such a huge total, Zimbabwe played as if they were already defeated, despite another strong performance from Craig Ervine (57), and a solid showing from Raza (74), the match was always going to end in a Pakistan win. Shadab Khan picked up four wickets, including three tail-enders, with Afridi grabbing three as well.

With such a good team batting performance, it was always going to be something special to claim the man of the match award, and it was unsurprising that it went to Rizwan for his historic knock.
