  • Fielding/Wicketkeeper rating

I've noticed that a couple of my fielders tend to put down a lot of catches, and yet they always seem to find themselves at first slip or in catching positions.

Is there a hidden rating for fielding? Or is it just random as to whether a catch will go down or not depending on what shot was played?

Additionally, are some wicketkeepers better with the gloves than others? I have a young keeper who tends to drop his fair share of catches, yet always gets picked in the national team despite a rubbish batting average. I'm assuming he's got some good ratings that I can't see, but just wanted to know whether wicketkeeping ability came into it - or if they are just chosen on batting ability.

Finally - if there are ratings for these traits, it'd be great if you could coach them just like you do with batting and bowling.

No one knows anything? I swear these forums used to be way more popular. Maybe I remember incorrectly.

I believe there is a catching rating. Because if you put a non specialist at keeper they will drop a lot of catches and allow lots of byes. Also I notice some of my keepers are very good (usually 0 byes in an innings and no drops) but some are not as strong. For example Kusul Silva is good for SL but Chandimal is not as strong as a keeper

There are fielding ratings and yes, training options for them is something under consideration.

Thanks for the reply Sureshot, good to know.

Out of curiosity, does the CPU automatically place the higher rated fielders in close catching positions? Or is it something we need to manually change?

Certain players always seem to find themselves at first slip or short leg, but I'm not sure if that's because they are the best catcher in the team or if it's just because a certain batting position automatically fields in a certain spot or something like that.

I wish the fielding ratings were visible somehow. That would be really useful for selection and field placement.

Yes, I've noticed that Adam Lyth takes a lot of screamers... Does this mean he just has a better fielding rating than others?

This is something that really would be good to know more about. I know the developers love secrecy (which is good in some respects as it ensures you don't work out how to cheat the system, but incredibly frustrating at times like this when it's something that just appears to be random).

I think that all players in the squad should receive general training automatically. We should then be selecting a certain number of specialised training slots around offside/onside, front foot/back foot, defensive shots/aggressive shots for batsmen, and the various options for bowlers..

I agree. All players should receive net training, and extra technique slots (general and specific), could then be allocated. I like the idea of fielding training too, although working out who the terrible fielders are would be quite difficult. Mind you in the modern era, most players are good fielders, but there are a few unbelievable fielders who stand out.
