  • English County Save

My goal for this save is to try and win Division 1 of the County Championship with every team - I'm beginning with Somerset, who came so close to winning in 2016.

    Somerset Squad (Season 1 - 2018)
Tom Abell (FC/OD captain) Ben Green
George Bartlett Lewis Gregory (T20 captain)
    Eddie Byrom Peter Trego
James Hildreth Roelof van der Merwe
    Tom Lammonby Dominic Bess
Johann Myburgh (OD/T20 only) Josh Davey
    Matt Renshaw (overseas) Tim Groenewald
    Tim Rouse Jack Leach
Marcus Trescothick (FC only) Craig Overton
    Tom Banton (wk) Jamie Overton
    Steven Davies (wk) Ollie Sale
Fin Trenouth (wk) Paul van Meekeren
Corey Anderson (overseas, T20 only) Max Waller
Tom Abell will captain the First Class and One Day sides, whilst Lewis Gregory will take over the T20 side for this season.
Matt Renshaw (Aus) and Corey Anderson (NZ) are our two overseas signings for the 2018 season.

My goal for the first season is to challenge in the Championship, aiming to at least finish in the top three.

We began the new season with news that spinner Max Waller had sustained a back injury that would keep him out of action for the first month of the season.
Corey Anderson had also been selected to play in the IPL 2018.

Result: Somerset won by an innings and 102 runs
    MOTM: Matt Renshaw (Somerset)
    • A positive start to the season, albeit against much weaker opposition than we can expect to face during the season.
    • Matt Renshaw made his Somerset debut.
    • The third wicket partnership between Renshaw and Hildreth, worth 424, is Somerset's highest ever third wicket partnership in first class cricket.
    • Jack Leach almost guaranteed selection for the first Championship game with a highly impressive bowling performance across both innings.
    • Tom Abell's second innings bowling performance backed up suggestions that he could play as a fourth seamer, allowing the batting to be strengthened further.

20th-23rd April 2018: Somerset vs Worcestershire (County Championship Division One - Taunton)
Worcestershire won the toss and elected to bat first.

      Somerset Worcestershire
      Marcus Trescothick Daryl Mitchell
      Eddie Byrom Brett D'Oliveira
      Matt Renshaw Travis Head
      James Hildreth Joe Clarke
      Tom Abell (c) Ross Whiteley
Steven Davies (wk) Ben Cox (wk)
      Tom Banton Ed Barnard
      Lewis Gregory Joe Leach (c)
      Craig Overton Steve Magoffin
      Jack Leach Charlie Morris
      Tim Groenewald Josh Tongue
On the opening morning of the County Championship, we were hit by the news that promising batsman George Bartlett would be out of action for three weeks with a back injury. 19 year old wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Banton makes his First Class debut, taking Josh Davey's place in the lineup, as the Scotsman failed to impress against the University side.

      Result: Match drawn
      Points: Worcs 13, Somerset 10
      MOTM: Joe Clarke (Worcestershire)
      • The game highlighted the sad reality that University warm-ups don't offer anywhere near the same challenge as the Championship games.
      • Jack Leach's 9 wickets across the game shows encouraging signs for our spinners - we may begin to prepare raging turners and introduce Bess into the lineup soon.
      • Steven Davies, leading run scorer from last season, showed signs of continuing his form with a first innings century.
      • Tom Abell couldn't back up his bowling from the warm-up: we may have to consider playing five bowlers instead of four.
      • Tim Groenewald unconvincing in both matches so far, needs a performance soon to strengthen his place in the team.

27th-30th April 2018: Somerset vs Yorkshire (County Championship Division One - Taunton)
Somerset won the toss and elected to bat first.
        Somerset Yorkshire
        Marcus Trescothick Adam Lyth
        Eddie Byrom Alex Lees
        Matt Renshaw Joe Root
        James Hildreth Tom Kohler-Cadmore
        Tom Abell (c) Cheteshwar Pujara
        Steven Davies (wk) Gary Ballance
        Lewis Gregory Jonny Bairstow (wk)
        Dominic Bess Azeem Rafiq
        Craig Overton Jack Brooks
        Jack Leach Steve Patterson (c)
        Tim Groenewald Ben Coad
For the first time this season, we selected two spinners in our lineup - Dom Bess replacing Tom Banton. Yorkshire had their international players available to them, meaning this was likely to be a difficult game to get a result from. However, their lack of a clear fifth bowling option could come to haunt them on a pitch that is expected to be relatively flat and not offer too much for the seamers.

        • First innings showed promising signs of form but we'll need to score more quickly in the future
        • Craig Overton continued his impressive form with the ball this season
        • Second innings collapse was worrying - collapsed from 121-2 to 171 all out
        • Groenewald still expensive and his place in the team is under pressure
        • Eddie Byrom is out for three weeks with a fracture.

4th-7th May 2018: Lancashire vs Somerset (County Championship Division One - Old Trafford)
Lancashire won the toss and elected to bat first.
          Lancashire Somerset
          Keaton Jennings Marcus Trescothick
          Haseeb Hameed Matt Renshaw
          Alex Davies James Hildreth
          Shiv Chanderpaul Tom Abell (c)
Liam Livingstone (c) Steven Davies (wk)
Steven Croft Roelof van der Merwe
          Dane Vilas (wk) Lewis Gregory
          Jonathan Skillbeck Tom Banton
          Joe Mennie Craig Overton
          Matt Parkinson Jack Leach
          James Anderson Tim Groenewald
Two forced changes were made from the Yorkshire match - Eddie Byrom is replaced by Tom Banton who will bat lower down the order, meaning Renshaw is promoted to open with Trescothick. Roelof van der Merwe replaces Dominic Bess who has a minor injury and is likely to return for the next game. England star James Anderson is available for Lancashire, who have heaps of young talent in Jennings, Hameed, Davies, Livingstone and Parkinson.

          • Efficient first innings bowling performance, much improved from Groenewald
          • Magnificent 192 from Hildreth the highlight of the batting, superb innings against a quality bowling attack
          • Craig Overton chipped in with an important 71*
          • Excellent bowling in the second innings, fantastic economy rates and picking up regular wickets throughout the innings

11th-14th May 2018: Somerset vs Hampshire (County Championship Division One - Taunton)
Hampshire won the toss and elected to bowl first.
            Somerset Hampshire
            Marcus Trescothick Jimmy Adams
            Matt Renshaw Tom Alsop (wk)
            James Hildreth Hashim Amla
            Tom Abell (c) James Vince
            Steven Davies (wk) Rilee Rossouw
Roelof van der Merwe Liam Dawson
            Lewis Gregory Sam Northeast
            Tom Banton Ian Holland
            Craig Overton Kyle Abbott
            Jack Leach Mason Crane
            Tim Groenewald Brad Wheal
Somerset are unchanged from their thrashing of Lancashire last week - Bess is back and available but van der Merwe did a decent job at Old Trafford and so keeps his place, maintaining batting depth. Hampshire look very strong, with Amla, Vince, Rossouw, Dawson, Abbott, Crane and Wheal all having international experience, as well as Sam Northeast who has been so close to finally appearing for England. Amla has averaged 70 in this year's competition so far, and their bowlers have been efficient, hence why they sit relatively high in the table.

Result: Hampshire won by 4 wickets
            Points: Somerset 4, Hants 21
            MOTM: Ian Holland (Hampshire)
            • No contribution from top order in either innings
            • Groenewald's late hitting gave us some respectability and one batting point
            • Fielding was poor in first innings but a Hampshire collapse kept us in the game
            • Yet another batting collapse saw us all but lose the game by the end of Day 3
            • Decent effort from the bowlers in Hampshire's second innings but was always too much of an ask to bowl them out for 125

We now move onto the One Day Cup, a competition where youngsters will be given their chance, before returning to the Championship in June.

9th-12th June 2018: Somerset vs Nottinghamshire (County Championship Division One - Taunton)
Nottinghamshire won the toss and elected to bat first.
                Somerset Nottinghamshire
                Marcus Trescothick Chris Nash
                Eddie Byrom Steven Mullaney (c)
                Matt Renshaw Jake Libby
                James Hildreth Luke Wood
                Tom Abell (c) Billy Root
                Steven Davies (wk) Riki Wessels
Peter Trego Quinton de Kock (wk)
                Lewis Gregory Stuart Broad
                Jamie Overton Jake Ball
                Jack Leach Mark Footitt
                Tim Groenewald Harry Gurney
With Overton and Bess still with England and Netherlands call-ups for van der Merwe and van Meekeren, we had a few selection issues for this game. Peter Trego and Jamie Overton play their first Championship games this season, with Eddie Byrom returning from his injury. Tom Abell keeps his place as captain despite being left out for the second half of the One Day Cup.

Result: Nottinghamshire won by 142 runs
                Points: Somerset 4, Nottinghamshire 23
                MOTM: Quinton de Kock (Nottinghamshire)

                • Definitely the wrong toss to lose - Notts batted the first day in full sunshine whilst we were under clouds on day 2
                • Byrom battled hard but was unconvincing in his 48
                • Much improved second innings bowling but hugely frustrating partnership of 104 between de Kock and Ball.
                • Heartbreakingly, Leach fell in the final over of day 4 to lose the game after most had battled so hard to earn a draw.

Somerset won the toss and elected to bat first.
                  Surrey Somerset

                  Will Jacks James Hildreth
                  Scott Borthwick Tom Abell (c)
                  Ollie Pope Steven Davies (wk)
                  Ben Foakes (wk) Peter Trego

                  Mathew Pillans Jack Leach
                  Morné Morkel Tim Groenewald
Our bowling attack is looking even more depleted now that Josh Davey has been picked for Scotland. Consequently, we are unchanged for a trip to Surrey.

                  • Big moment for Byrom to score his first hundred of the season
                  • Also first innings contributions from Trescothick, Hildreth and Davies
                  • Losing Gregory to an injury basically meant we couldn't win the match, having only two main seamers and a spinner
                  • Still a relatively decent effort with the ball considering the complete lack of resources
                  • Second innings hundred from Tres, finally runs for Renshaw too

                    Craig Young Jack Leach
                    Jamie Porter Tim Groenewald
With Gregory expected to be out for up to four weeks, it was vital that our international players were able to return for this day-night fixture against leaders Essex. Trego is dropped for van der Merwe, while Craig Overton replaces the injured Gregory.

                    • Finally Renshaw seems to be finding some form
                    • Decent first innings score on an already difficult pitch
                    • Bowled very well to the middle/lower order to dismiss them with a deficit of only five runs
                    • Our second innings once again highlighted our complete inability to bat properly when the ball starts moving

                      Steve Fry Craig Overton
                      Steve Magoffin Jamie Overton
                      Charlie Morris Jack Leach
                      Josh Tongue Tim Groenewald
After two weeks, we return to Championship action with a fixture at New Road against 4th placed Worcestershire. Dominic Bess plays just his second Championship game this season, replacing van der Merwe. The batting looks potentially light and we will be relying on the top order to score the majority of our runs.

                      Result: Match drawn
                      Points: Worcestershire 12, Somerset 10
                      MOTM: Moeen Ali (Worcestershire)

                      • Probably should have batted first in hindsight
                      • Top order failed once again in first innings
                      • Bowled slightly better in second innings when batsmen were trying to attack
                      • Excellent rearguard batting in final innings to save a draw - Tres and Hildreth both batted more than four hours.

After a disappointing T20 campaign, we return to the Championship for the remainder of the summer, in an equally disappointing position at the foot of the Championship. Can we avoid relegation with a late-season string of positive results? Bess and Overton have returned to England duty so are replaced by Gregory and van der Merwe.

                          • van der Merwe and Gregory saved us in the first innings after an awful top order display
                          • Excellent first innings bowling to five us a lead of approximately 80, Gregory very impressive
                          • Top order failed again in second innings, Davies helped to set Essex a difficult target
                          • Good bowling performance again in second innings, took wickets consistently and won comfortably

Somerset named an unchanged team for their fixture at Headingley after a dominant performance against Essex last week.

                            Result: Match drawn

                            MOTM: Tom Kohler-Cadmore (Yorkshire)
                            • Bowling first in overcast conditions, we couldn't quite put in our best performance despite a good start
                            • Record third wicket partnership for Somerset against Yorkshire (Renshaw & Hildreth 198)
                            • Struggled to take regular wickets in second innings
                            • Chase was unrealistic so we shut up shop after the loss of Byrom and Renshaw.
                            • Another relatively positive result sees us move out of the relegation zone and into fifth place.

4th-7th September 2018: Somerset vs Lancashire (County Championship Division One - Taunton)
Somerset won the toss and elected to bat first.
                              Somerset Lancashire
                              Marcus Trescothick Haseeb Hameed
                              Eddie Byrom Alex Davies (wk)
                              Matt Renshaw Liam Livingstone (c)
                              James Hildreth Shiv Chanderpaul
                              Tom Abell (c) Steven Croft
                              Steven Davies (wk) Dane Vilas
Roelof van der Merwe Kurt Senior
                              Lewis Gregory Joe Mennie
                              Jamie Overton Stephen Parry
                              Jack Leach Saqib Mahmood
                              Tim Groenewald Matt Parkinson
Somerset were once again unchanged as they hosted Lancashire in what could be an important game by the end of the season, with Lancashire 18 points ahead of Somerset, though we have a game in hand.

Result: Somerset won by 220 runs
                              Points: Somerset 21, Lancashire 6
                              MOTM: Matt Renshaw (Somerset)

                              • Slightly disappointing first innings - best time to bat in the game and we couldn't take advantage, although some encouraging signs for Abell's form
                              • Bowling was okay but we allowed the tail to get away from us - last four wickets yielded 138 runs
                              • Another superb Renshaw-Hildreth partnership (3rd wicket worth 263 runs), both batsmen passing 150
                              • Brilliant second innings bowling - Overton fantastic with the new ball and the spinners were very effective
