  • T20 struggles

    Hi everyone

I’m in need of some help. Purchased CC21 the other day, and I’m really struggling with T20 cricket.

My frustrations reached maximum in a game I’ve just been playing. Opposition went out and posted 182. After 2 overs of my innings, we’re 1-2, with Liam Livingstone and Finn Allen the two batsmen out.

In the second over, Finn Allen played out 5 dot balls before getting out at the end of the over.

I understand that sometimes teams struggle and I don’t necessarily mind that I might lose some games. But in a match where we’re chasing 182, how is it that my aggressive opening batsmen (with aggression set 3 from the very top) are playing out 5 consecutive dot balls? I’ve looked at each delivery individually, and 3 of the 5 shots were defensive shots. Is there something I’m doing wrong or just missing?

I’ve tried increasing aggression, but then I seem to lose lots of wickets.

    Any tips greatly appreciated.

When playing a comp with power play at the start I set aggression to 9. Typically I lose one or two wickets (after two wickets I lower back to 7) in that time but have a high run rate. When the fields spread back out I keep my most confident batsman on 9 and lower the other to 7. I start any new batsman that come in after that at 7 too. If a batsman survives for a few overs, they move to 8 to keep the run rate ticking over. Typically I've lost 4-6 wickets by the 15 over mark. Depending on how many batsmen are still in the shed everyone gets cranked up to 9 again. If I've lost a few more wickets than usual, I farm strike with the better batsman on 9 and hope the tail-enders survive. Most of the time I score between 160 and 200. I've had scores of 220+ when a strong opener manages to carry their bat with high aggression for 20 overs. That's very rare of course.

For bowling I bowl to the opposite of the batsman's strengths. A batsman who has a strong back foot on the leg side will get balls pitched up, outside off. Not sure this is the best method since some batsman don't seem to care and score plenty of boundaries either way but usually you get more dots and chances than boundaries. Not using the default field settings seems to work well too. Keep an eye on the wear of a pitch before the match. For a spinning pitch, I try to have a strike spinner and an allround spinner. On a seamers' pitch I'll pick four quicks. When it's a flat deck, I'll pick four specialist bowlers and hope my batsmen get the job done.

As with other formats, try to keep an eye on the form of your players. Since T20s are shorter, I find a run of poor form from a player can fly under the radar easily.

This is what works more often than not for me. In CC21 I've made finals of the T20 comp every year winning most matches. Was only top of the table once and have won just the single title in three years so far so there are probably better strats you could get from others.

I've only played five T20 matches in this edition so far (won 3 and lost 2, including one that I tied and then lost in a super over), so can't claim to be an absolute expert, but I'll share what I've tried in those few games.

With batting, as I've done in other formats (and noted in other threads), rather than choosing my aggression based on a certain number of bars, I've paid more attention to the E.RPO number. I keep an eye on that, playing ball by ball, and move the aggression around to whatever has the E.RPO at between 7 and 8 an over for most of the innings. I might drop it down a little against one bowler if he's is proving really dangerous, or conversely push it higher against one bowler if he's getting a bit hammered. I then also push it higher in the second half of the innings, particularly for any settled batters (and go pretty much to the max in the last few overs if I have enough wickets in hand). I haven't registered any massive totals yet, but I posted at least 150 in all five games I've played using that method.

In terms of bowling, I often apply Wilted's method of bowling to the opposite of the batter's strengths in 4-day games, but in T20 I stick pretty rigidly to an off-stump line (although vary the length a bit), starting with 2 or 3 bars of aggression when the batter is new in, but then pretty quickly dropping down to 1 bar. If a batter is scoring heavily through the off side though, I might give him a few balls on a different line to see if that cuts down those scoring shots. If I'm into the lower order later in the innings, I often switch to bowling full-pitched on middle stump (the old "you miss, I hit" theory). Basically, similar to batting, the best approach seems to be playing ball by ball, starting with the approach you want to take but being ready to react to what the opponent is doing and try things to counter it.

More than the t20 format - the ODI game in 2021 baffles me! I mean - what does one do? you go down on attck, the run rate drops... you go very high and you loose wickets, there is nothing that seems to work as such. It is crazy. I seem to have got the hold with the test format and to an extent the t20. But the ODI format continues to baffle me.
However, for more reasons than one...2021 game does not impress me as much in comparison to 2020 - which was a hoot

I totally agree with you Savio.

In OD and in T20 mode you up the aggression and then the next over goes for 1 run. What's that about?

I'm surprised that you're struggling in ODI mode as it favours going aggressive early. If ever I do well it's when I blast my way to 200 and then struggle in the last 20 and end up with 300.

I definitely think something with the engine has changed radically and it's incredibly hard for any batsmen to come in and hit any kind of runs, even top top players get out cheaply in ODI and T20 games and players who are renowned for their explosive hitting are poor.

I’m good at winning low scoring games but I’m struggling to get modern day scores in limited over cricket. 250 OD or 150 t20 seems to be my competitive totals.

Hopefully just a case of more practice(and maybe getting some better players)

              I definitely can't get T20.

Online now I was 102-1 from 11 overs and only got 139.... losing 8 wickets in 6 overs. I didn't even go full aggression, only aiming for 6.9/over.

This seems really wrong as it's happening all the time.

I'm definitely going to try going aggro in the One Dayers - let's see how it does. I've played Akhtar (LOCI) and he's a beast on the 2021 game. Brar is no 1 on the rankings at the moment (something is definitely wrong... lol)

I've been in talks with fellow players on the 2021 game and they all seem to say that the scores you say (250 in OD and 150 in t20's) are actually the scores that are working - so you're doing the right things.

This game is flawed on so many levels - server irregularities, errors, game engine. WORST version ever! I can't even believe the kinds of results here. I'm sticking to the ATG games.

Only worthy addition is that of the super over but at the expense of match engine. I never watch highlights so the new kits aren't any value addition to me.
Cricket captain 2020 for me was the best ever version of cc. The match engine was spot on especially for white ball games. AI chasing in odi became more realistic. The new UI colour is ugly on mobile and the controls have got a bit slow. The ui colour should have been a brighter shade like blue or purple.

I agree really... limited over games are really poor. And seeing as that's what I play mostly online, the games are deeply frustrating.

I was defending 9 runs and opposition had 4 wickets left and 18 balls to win and I won. That's ridiculous really.

There's alot of complaints about this game here. I'm sure the developers are getting frustrated putting in the many many hours/days/weeks/months on making a game that tries to appease everybody.
This game is still great. There are so much time to be lost by watching a made a team play and being able to control it.
Not all games go my way. I have lost the u lose able matches.... but that adds to the game. It gives you highs and lows. It actually makes you feel something.

Please remember this is a GAME. Its not perfect but for the amount of hours you can put into it. It's bloody fantastic.

Until you can develop your own game maybe stop throwing out the criticism and try and help develop the game and help the developers with some constructive feedback.

This would be one of the only games where the developers read the forum and do try work with the people that actually play the game for database changes and big fixes etc.... this is very comforting knowing if there is an issue. We can reach out and they will do their best to fix it.

Keep going Sureshot and the team. My wife hates you but I love this game and every version before.

I echo what Cam says. The game is a huge time sink, and that's perfect. Cricket is unpredictable, you'll never get a guaranteed result. Looking at India in Oz, Stokes at Headingly, India collapsing in the WTC final.

Also please bear in mind the developers have put in a serious stint to get the game out in a worldwide pandemic, where other, much larger, studios have failed. To label it the "worst" version ever is quite frankly an irresponsible assessment of the game.
                            Nottinghamshire supporter and proud!

Absolutely mate. The game is still awesome. It is the only game I play. I actually like the fact that game engine changes every version( for better or worse). Actually I am planing to leave the forum. If you read the forum too much you notice minor flaws which you would not have notices if you weren't on the forum.
