  • Low One Day scores

I am in 2028, coaching Australia, and I have noticed that one day scores and strike rates are extremely low across the board.

To demonstrate this, here is a list of my current ODI batsmen. The numbers are games played, batting average and strike rate (rounded to the nearest whole number).

    S.Smith - 139, 25, 73
    C.Bancroft - 73, 22, 70
    A.Keath - 65, 19, 73
    S.Garforth - 59, 24, 75
    R.Friend - 56, 22, 69
    M.Charlton - 50, 28, 72
    J.Welch - 28, 26, 74
    M.Blakemore - 22, 24, 57
    H.Marshall - 17, 23, 71
    T.Cooper - 15, 23, 78

I have kept stats throughout my whole game, from 2012 to 2028. In this time, from 79 players across 289 ODI games, just five players average over 30:

    D.Warner - 254, 36, 77
    J.Burns - 142, 32, 69
    S.Watson - 113, 34, 76
    M.Hussey - 57, 38, 74
    R.Ponting - 40, 35, 69

Almost all of my one day games are skipped, so I'm not doing anything odd in the games. The AI sides seem to have similar issues, though there are at least a few averaging in the 30s. All of the top-10 ranked batsmen in the world average in the 20s in ODIs.

Compare this to real life, and there's several players averaging in the 40s with strike rates of 80+

    Has anyone else noticed this?

Definitely. An average ODI score in this game seems to be around 210-220, whereas in real life I'd say that it's around 260, maybe close to 300 on batting friendly tracks.

How often do your players score hundreds? I'd say around once every 8 or 9 matches, whereas in real life it's once every few matches.

31 hundreds in 289 matches, so just over one every nine games (and 17 of those 31 were to Dave Warner).

It probably doesn't help that their strike rates are so low.

Test batting averages are also a bit low (tending to be in the 30s to low 40s even for the elite batsmen), but it's most striking in ODIs.

I'll take a look at this. The stats for skipped matches are not representative though, as your players do not perform at their top ability in skipped games.

I have been having the same problem, I play all the matches bar 20/20 and domestic. Im in 2030, and the batting is incredibly poor among all nations. My best test batsmen averages 37, and I have a few bowlers who average 22 or lower. Almost every test nation has at least one player averaging under 22 with the ball in test cricket, and no batsmen average over 43 globally.

One day cricket, I have a few batsmen with averages of 30ish, highest 34. I have 3 bowlers averaging under 20 with the ball, and throughout all the interational cricketers no one averages more than 37. Also, a lot of bowlers with averages under 20....

Hopefully there can be a patch to address the bat/ball balance.

Is this resolved? Was thinking of picking up 2012 (played alot of 2010 and 11) but this sounds pretty game breaking

That's quite odd; I'm in 2039 now and I have a Test batsman averaging 50 and another four in the low 40s. Globally, it is low but not quite as low as you have encountered; the top ten international batsmen average from 50 to 36.

Across my 27 seasons, I have had just four players average under 30 with the ball in their career - three of them spinners, the other a pace bowler with an average of 29.7 - so I have found Test scores quite high in my games (at least for my opposition!).

I have now been playing ODI matches rather than simming them for the last decade, and the averages have picked up a bit, but not much. It still seems like mid-20s to early 30s is the norm, with strike-rates in the 70s.

Here are my specialist batsmen, keepers and batting all-rounders with 10+ games now [games, ave, strike rate]:

              M.Charlton - 253, 39, 78
              T.Ecclestone - 36, 30, 67
              R.Herceg - 111, 26, 68
              N.London - 22, 29, 73
              L.Fullerton - 75, 28, 78
              T.Wodehouse - 11, 30, 78
              A.Vernon - 28, 31, 62
              W.Forrest - 54, 27, 79
              M.London - 71, 32, 75
              J.Murphy - 59, 30, 70
              T.Barlow - 48, 28, 66
              S.Hoggart - 50, 27, 70
              M.Ogden - 27, 27, 70
              D.Cockerill - 447, 22, 66
              J.Sheen - 35, 18, 61
              A.Wodehouse - 35, 27, 64
              M.Callan - 25, 24, 68

I'd say it's still worth getting. It's not quite realistic, but the game itself is still fun. I find this an annoyance, yet have played 27 seasons - well and truly good value for money.

I hope that an adjustment doesn't swing things the other way! There are plenty of test bowlers around with averages around the mid-high 20s. There are also phenomenal bowlers with averages like 17 and 23 e.g. Philander and Steyn.

There definitely need to be a few more top notch ODI and Test batsmen though in later seasons!
