  • World Composite XI (off topic)

Hi all, what do you think is the current world test team based on performances over the last couple of years and anticipated performance over the coming years? I love discussions like this!

Anderson and Steyn as the pace bowlers, surely?

I'd go for Swann. No bias of course! :P I think he is just that little bit better, although on a sub-continent pitch, I'd be inclined to select both

          1.Alistair Cook
          2.Graeme Smith (c)
          3.Hashim Amla
          4.Jacques Kallis
          5.Kumar Sangakkara
          6.Michael Clarke
          7.Ab de Villiers (wk)
          8.Shakib Al Hasan
          9.Vernon Philander
          10.Dale Steyn
          11.James Anderson

Rather than just going by stats, I added some guys based on personal opinion. Bowling wise, Philander hasn't played long enough to be considered a great (obviously) but there really weren't any decent seamers who've played long enough with a decent enough bowling average.

shocking mate :P .... ajmals definetly a different class ... in the pakistan v england series both were head to head, and ajmal out-performed swann by miles.. Even monty and rehman out-performed him.. but trouthfully ajal is by far the better.. (not only in avaages.. but in reality) ..

I like de Villiers at 7!! My goodness - he averages about 50 so that is stunning to have coming in then!

No Trott in either of those teams?! He has been fairly consistent

                      Let's see here then:

Cook (Best opener in the world)
                      Smith (Consistent)
                      Amla (Easily ahead of Trott)
Kallis ( Brilliant batsman, can bowl a bit as well)
                      Pietersen (Match-winning batsman)
                      Clarke (Oozes class)
Prior (Best wicket-keeper in the world)
Swann (Easily in a much higher class than Ajmal)
                      Philander (No-brainer)
Steyn (Most consistent bowler in the world)
Anderson (Most talented bowler in the world)

Nice choice! Do you think that Anderson as the most talented bowler in the world will finish with a career average below 30? He is undoubtedly amazing but his average and strike rate implies inconsistency. In the right conditions he is utterly unplayable.

Steyn is a must pick as he has the best strike rate of any bowler of all time with more than 300 wickets, I think he averages about 23.

Interesting choice with Pujara, seems a brilliant talent, but he's only really been playing on Indian pitches. The only occasion he has played on an overseas pitch was in South Africa where he didn't score any runs. But still, he has the technique and amazing concentration levels (two double centuries already!).

It seemed odd not to have an Indian batsman and Dhawan has only just started out really. Some of the stalwarts have gone off the boil, so I thought it might be nice to throw him in! Ditto Ashwin who is arguably not as good as Ajmal or Swann, but also offers a great deal with the bat, not that my team needs much help there!
